Torres on target again as PSG edge past rivals Marseille 2-1

Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to beat bitter rivals Marseille 2-1 away in Ligue 1 on Sunday, with substitute Ferran Torres once again playing a key role for the reigning European champions.

Torres, who joined PSG from Barcelona over the summer, was introduced just before the hour mark in place of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. He headed home a cross from Desire Doue in the 66th minute to put PSG ahead at the Velodrome.

Marseille responded quickly, with England midfielder Angel Gomes scoring an excellent equaliser in the 72nd minute. However, PSG regained the lead only three minutes later when captain Marquinhos converted a rebound after his initial effort, set up by a Nuno Mendes cross, was saved by goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange.

Marseille's afternoon worsened further when former PSG player Timothy Weah, now with the home side, was sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving his team to finish the match with ten men.

The win extended an impressive run for Torres, who also scored the winner against Brest the previous weekend and now has seven goals in six appearances across all competitions since his move, despite starting only three of those matches. Speaking after the game, Torres said the match had been one of the season's most important and that the team knew it would be difficult before securing the win.

The result lifted PSG to sixth in the Ligue 1 table, five points behind leaders Monaco after five rounds. Marseille, meanwhile, have now lost four consecutive league matches and five in a row across all competitions, dropping into the relegation zone as the season pauses for three weeks of international fixtures.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1 over the weekend, Monaco beat Lens 2-1 to stay unbeaten and two points clear at the top, ahead of both Lyon and Paris FC. Lyon thrashed Rennes 4-0, while Paris FC beat Strasbourg 2-1. Lille missed the chance to draw level with Monaco after losing 2-1 at Nice, and Auxerre beat Brest 2-1.
