A 59-year-old tourist died during a hike near Rio de Janeiro after slipping on a narrow trail and falling into a 30-meter deep gorge while trying to apply mosquito repellent.

A tragic accident occurred near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during a hike when a 59-year-old tourist lost her balance and fell into a 30-meter deep gorge. According to German outlet "Bild," the woman was part of a tour group visiting the "Grutas do Spar" caves, a popular destination for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts located about 45 kilometers from downtown Rio, in an area of abandoned mines.
The incident happened on a narrow trail near a lookout point. Due to many insects in the area, the woman decided to use mosquito repellent. While lifting her leg to spray the repellent, she suddenly lost her balance, slipped, and fell into the gorge. Fellow hiker Giovanni Maximino said that the guide tried to grab her at the last moment but nearly fell himself. "Everything happened incredibly fast; no one could react," he stated.
Rescue services arrived at the scene, but the tourist had sustained fatal injuries from the fall. The responders could only recover her remains from the gorge.
