Trump envoy Witkoff: progress made toward ending war after Moscow and Kyiv talks
US President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said significant progress has been made in efforts to halt Russia's war against Ukraine following meetings with Putin and Zelensky, though no concrete deal has been reached yet.
US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff announced on Monday that meaningful progress had been made in talks aimed at stopping Russia's invasion of Ukraine, following a weekend of high-level meetings in both Moscow and Kyiv.
Witkoff, together with Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, first traveled to Moscow, where they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two American representatives then went on to Ukraine's capital for talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Progress and new proposals
Writing on the platform X, Witkoff said substantial progress had been achieved, including movement on planning possible future trilateral talks. He stressed that Trump is making great efforts to stop the bloodshed and bring the parties closer to a stable, lasting peace.
After their meeting with Zelensky, the American envoys said they had brought "new ideas" to Kyiv for potentially ending the war, though they did not disclose specifics of what was discussed.
Cautious response from the Kremlin
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the talks with the American delegation cautiously, calling them "one small step" toward peace, while adding that Moscow values the efforts of the US negotiators.
Despite the statements of progress from both sides, no concrete agreement to end the fighting has been reached, and no date has been set for a possible next round of trilateral talks.
