US President Donald Trump has announced plans to remove the 10 percent tariff currently applied to Irish whiskey. He shared the news with reporters during the awards ceremony for the Irish Open golf tournament.
According to Trump, the decision came after numerous requests from various people. He said he had been asked to lift the tariff by Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, as well as by several golfers, including tournament winner Shane Lowry.

The US president said he had been repeatedly pressed on the matter and promised that, on behalf of the United States, he would remove the tariff on Irish whiskey.
Background
The announcement came just days after Trump arrived in Ireland on September 12 for a two-day visit. During the trip, he also expressed a desire to see Ireland reunified with Northern Ireland, which remains under British administration.
