US President Donald Trump revealed in an interview with The New York Post that he has prepared clear instructions in case Iran manages to assassinate him. He stated he ordered to "bomb Iran to a level they have never seen before." Trump claimed he has long been at the top of Iran's target list for elimination.

The president denied reports that Israel recently passed intelligence to the US about possible assassination plots against him. He emphasized that Iran has wanted him dead for years, since 2020 when he ordered the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

Trump spoke openly about these threats at the NATO summit in Ankara, calling Iranians "evil" for their attacks in the strait despite a ceasefire. He noted that Iran has had several leaders who are no more, and that he too is target number one. On Wednesday, Trump changed planes on his way back from Ankara, which the White House later described as a tactical security measure due to threats.

This week, tensions between the countries peaked when, during the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, protesters displayed giant posters calling for Trump's assassination. One speaker at the memorial event declared that killing Trump is their duty. In May 2026, White House official Sebastian Gorka revealed that Trump had left a letter for Vice President JD Vance in case something happens to him.
