US President Donald Trump has said he may have to become “Mr. Veto” if Democrats win a majority in the US congressional midterm elections on Tuesday, 3 November, according to Bloomberg. The remark is a rare acknowledgement from Trump that his Republican Party could lose.

“They send bills, and you veto them. Eventually, after a month or two, when all the bills have been vetoed, which, as you understand, is just a waste of time, they will come to you and make a deal,” Trump said.

Campaigning in Republican strongholds

Bloomberg notes that the president has been campaigning continuously, visiting states that have traditionally been Republican bastions. The party now faces a tougher fight there as voters worry about the high cost of living and the war in Iran.

What the polls show

Most polls indicate Democrats have good chances of winning the three House of Representatives seats they need to take control of that chamber. They are also increasingly confident of winning the Senate, where polls show only a slim margin in seven districts.

Republican strategists say their internal data paints a more competitive picture in the Senate, where many key races remain undecided or are well within reach.

In his speeches, Trump keeps repeating that the country has the “best economy in history” and that polls do not correctly reflect Republican votes.

Background

It was earlier reported that European NATO member states are preparing for the possibility that a Republican defeat in the midterms could prompt Trump to sharply escalate his attacks on the alliance.
