Trump links civil nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia to joining Abraham Accords
The US has reached a civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, but Donald Trump stated that its approval depends entirely on Saudi Arabia recognizing Israel by joining the Abraham Accords.
The United States announced on Wednesday that it has finalized an agreement with Saudi Arabia to establish a civilian nuclear program for the kingdom. Washington emphasized that the deal includes non-proliferation safeguards.
Former US President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the agreement will be approved, but it is entirely contingent on Saudi Arabia joining the highly respected and successful Abraham Accords. The Abraham Accords were signed in 2020 during Trump's first term, normalizing relations between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Later, similar agreements were reached with Sudan, Morocco, and Kazakhstan. The US has long sought Saudi Arabia's participation in these accords.
In 2023, Saudi Arabia held preliminary talks with Israel about normalizing relations, but abruptly withdrew after the outbreak of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza. Saudi Arabia has stated that it will not recognize Israel until an independent Palestinian state is established.
