US President Donald Trump has said that if the Democratic Party gains control of Congress in the midterm elections, he will reject all legislative initiatives put forward by its members. The vote takes place on 3 November, and its outcome will determine whether the president has to work with a Congress controlled by the opposition.

Trump made the remarks on Sunday on the podcast "Pod Force One". "If that happens, I will become 'Mr. Veto,'" the president promised. He added that he intends to use the veto power regularly in order to force congressional Democrats to reach agreements with him.

What the polls show

Polls indicate that the Democratic Party could significantly increase its representation in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress, and also win a slim majority in the Senate.

Active campaign involvement

Trump has been heavily involved in the campaign. He is supporting fellow Republicans by visiting various states and urging citizens to vote for Republican candidates.

In September, the president promised to pay every adult American 5,000 dollars if Republicans win. He called the initiative the "Trump dividend".

In mid-October, representatives of Trump's team filed a lawsuit demanding that the election results in Alaska be annulled if the Democratic candidate were to win. However, on 1 November a federal judge refused to grant the request.
