US President Donald Trump has declared that attempts to restrict artificial intelligence amount to a "sick conspiracy," insisting the only safeguard needed is a smart president. He also revealed his administration had already blocked Anthropic from taking certain actions deemed harmful.
US President Donald Trump on Monday sharply criticized calls for stricter regulation of artificial intelligence, describing such efforts on social media as a "sick conspiracy."
According to Trump, the only real safeguard artificial intelligence needs is a strong, high-IQ president — and he asserted that the United States already has exactly that. He argued no additional regulatory framework is necessary for the sector.
Trump also disclosed that his administration had already intervened, blocking the AI company Anthropic from carrying out actions his administration considered bad or potentially harmful.
Clash with tech industry
Trump's remarks pushed back directly against appeals made by several major industry players, including Anthropic, OpenAI and Microsoft. These companies had called for clearer rules governing AI development to address safety, legal liability and national security concerns.
The president, however, believes excessive regulation could weaken the United States' position and allow China to overtake America in artificial intelligence. He claimed that current efforts to restrict AI and its associated data centers effectively serve only China's interests.
