US President Donald Trump, following consultations with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine, has decided to continue diplomatic talks with Iran rather than resume military strikes, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

During the discussions, the possibility of renewing US attacks on Iran was raised, but Trump reportedly concluded that another round of full-scale assaults could derail diplomacy and harm Washington's efforts to dismantle Iran's nuclear program.

Trump also told aides he has no objection if negotiations with Tehran extend beyond the August 18 deadline set for a nuclear agreement.

On June 17, the US and Iran remotely signed a memorandum to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This document serves as the basis for finalizing a ceasefire agreement within 60 days. The first round of technical talks took place in Switzerland last week.

On June 23, the US Congress passed a symbolic resolution in both chambers urging President Trump to stop the war with Iran. The resolution calls for the withdrawal of US forces engaged in combat against Tehran unless Congress explicitly authorizes continued hostilities or war is declared.
