Trump Lashes Out at Norway After Nobel Peace Prize Goes to Navi Pillay
US President Donald Trump sharply criticised Norway at a campaign rally after this year's Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge, rather than to him. He called the decision disgraceful and humiliating.

US President Donald Trump on Friday launched a sharp attack on Norway at a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, over the fact that he was not awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize. The prize is awarded by the Nobel Committee, which operates in Norway, and this year it chose Navi Pillay, a former judge of the International Criminal Court. Reuters reported the story.
Who the laureate is
Pillay led the preparation of a UN report that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Trump called her a "mysterious person" and said he had never heard of her, adding that nobody had.
Trump's criticism
According to Reuters, Trump has expressed disappointment throughout his presidency that he has not won the award. At the rally he described the decision as "an indelible stain on Norway and on the people who made such a disgraceful and humiliating decision."
Trump listed several conflicts in which he said he had played a part. He claimed to have helped prevent wars between North Korea and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan. He offered no evidence for these claims.
He closed his remarks with even harsher words. He said the Nobel Peace Prize had been discredited forever by a handful of radical ideologues who, in his words, are against democracy and are in fact enemies of civilisation. He added that he would not forget it, addressing Norway directly.
