Awkward situation at the award ceremony

After Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, the award ceremony took place. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and US President Donald Trump hung medals around the players' necks. Trump was loudly booed by the crowd as he entered the field.

Trump fails to move aside

Infantino and Trump together presented the World Cup trophy to Spain captain Rodri. Infantino immediately left the center of the podium so the Spanish team could lift the trophy alone, and gestured for Trump to do the same. However, Trump remained standing directly in front of the Spanish team. Rodri also asked the US president to step aside. Trump slowly moved away, shook hands with player Pedri, but eventually stood right next to the team. Rodri waited until Infantino rushed over and tried to lead Trump away, but it didn't help. When Rodri finally lifted the trophy, Trump was still standing beside the Spaniards.

Similar incident a year ago

This is not the first time Trump has caused an awkward moment at an award ceremony. A year ago, he and Infantino presented the Club World Cup trophy to London's Chelsea. On that occasion too, the US president did not fully understand the ceremony protocol and remained among the players, creating an awkward situation.
