US President Donald Trump, asked by reporters outside the White House whether he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this year, confirmed that he does. Should the meeting take place, it would be the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders during Trump's second term as president.

During the same exchange with journalists, Trump also cited a specific figure regarding North Korea's nuclear arsenal, stating that the country possesses 57 nuclear weapons. He described them as very powerful and said such a situation should never have been allowed to happen, while adding that he personally gets along well with Kim.

Pyongyang's response

Meanwhile, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korea's leader, said on Wednesday that she has no information about recent contacts between her brother and Trump, which the US president had mentioned to reporters on Monday. The statement was reported by North Korea's official news agency KCNA.

Kim Yo Jong acknowledged that this may be the only matter related to the country's top leadership's foreign policy of which she is unaware. At the same time, she stressed that her brother retains good memories of Trump and that relations between the two leaders remain excellent.
