US President Donald Trump met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Wednesday, calling him a great leader, a friend, and a widely respected figure. Trump acknowledged Rutte's excellent work in leading the alliance but repeated his criticism of European allies, stating that they had betrayed the US in the war against Iran.

Specifically, Trump mentioned Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France as sources of disappointment. He was particularly harsh on Spain, describing its conduct as a "horror show." Despite the tensions, Trump emphasized his respect for Rutte and noted that they would discuss recent events and future cooperation.

The meeting took place ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara, which will gather leaders from all 32 member states. The relationship between Washington and its NATO allies has been strained after the US alleged insufficient support in the Iran war. High-ranking US officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have described the allies' stance as shameful and hinted that Washington might reassess its ties with NATO.
