US President Donald Trump signaled that Washington is ready to help Russia amid a worrying health situation in the Irkutsk region, where the death of a 28-year-old anti-plague institute employee has fueled reports of a possible pneumonic plague case. Trump noted that such infections used to be easier to treat, but microbes have grown significantly more resistant, and pledged American support as the US does for any country facing such a problem.

Russian authorities deny the plague version, officially describing the case as pneumonia of unknown origin. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is monitoring the situation but does not currently see it as cause for alarm, noting that travel between the two countries is limited, though such illnesses can spread quickly.

Quarantine measures and conflicting accounts

Several hospitals in the Irkutsk region, including in Shelekhov, have introduced quarantine restrictions, and hundreds of people have been placed under medical observation. Russia's chief sanitary doctor, Anna Popova, has traveled to the region. Russia's consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor insists the epidemiological situation remains stable and denies any laboratory accident involving dangerous pathogens.

Two competing accounts have emerged publicly: one suggests the employee was infected after returning from Thailand, the other that a laboratory incident involving a plague-causing sample may have occurred. Media reports cite 197 identified contacts, most of whom were placed under medical supervision. Several official statements referencing the plague have been altered or deleted after being published, adding to confusion about the true scale of the situation.
