Following the conclusion of the World Cup, an unusual idea has emerged: US President Donald Trump reportedly wants to see FIFA President Gianni Infantino as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. The information was published by the New York Post, citing an anonymous source close to Trump.

According to the source, Trump views Infantino as a person respected globally and capable of uniting people. Trump’s special envoy for global partnerships, Paolo Zampolli, called the idea genius, noting similarities between leading FIFA and the UN – both are global organizations with a broad membership base requiring effective leadership.

So far, neither the White House, FIFA, nor Infantino himself have confirmed any candidacy. It is also unclear whether Trump has discussed the idea with Infantino. Experts interpret the leak as a test of public opinion to see how the international community might react to such a candidate.

The next UN Secretary-General is set to take office in January 2026, and the search for candidates is already underway. While Infantino’s name is unexpected in this context, there are no theoretical barriers preventing a FIFA president from becoming the UN chief.
