140 Illegal Migration Attempts Prevented at Latvia-Belarus Border on Wednesday
Latvian border guards stopped 140 people from illegally crossing the border from Belarus on Wednesday. So far this year, a total of 8,553 illegal crossing attempts have been prevented.

On Wednesday, January 22, the State Border Guard of Latvia prevented 140 attempts by illegal migrants to cross the border from Belarus. This brings the total number of prevented illegal border crossing attempts this year to 8,553.
The government has extended the enhanced border security regime along the Belarusian border until the end of this year. The decision was made in response to the increased flow of illegal migrants orchestrated by Belarus. The enhanced control measures apply to several administrative territories: Ludza and the parishes of Ludza Municipality, Krāslava and the parishes of Krāslava Municipality, Augšdaugava Municipality, Daugavpils, and Kaunata Parish in Rēzekne Municipality.
For comparison, last year border guards prevented a total of 12,046 attempts to cross the Latvia-Belarus border illegally. Of those, 31 migrants were allowed entry on humanitarian grounds. In 2024, 5,388 people were prevented from crossing illegally, while 26 were admitted for humanitarian reasons.
