Wednesday's transfer gossip: Villa table Mateta bid, City still chasing Fernandez

Aston Villa have made an offer for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta that falls short of the club's valuation, while Manchester City remain intent on submitting a formal bid for Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez before the window closes.

Wednesday's round-up of transfer talk features several Premier League clubs active as the summer window nears its end.

Aston Villa have reportedly submitted an offer for Crystal Palace and France forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, 29, though the bid is well below Palace's valuation. Villa are simultaneously close to finalising a deal worth around €70m for Chelsea and Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson, 25.

Manchester United are said to be weighing up contact with VfB Stuttgart regarding 20-year-old German defender Finn Jeltsch. Manchester City, meanwhile, are still planning to lodge a formal offer with Chelsea for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez, 25, before the transfer window shuts.

Tottenham could look to gazump Napoli in the race for Marseille and Algeria winger Amine Gouiri, 26. Newcastle are preparing a final offer worth roughly €60m for Lille and Belgium forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, 21.

Leeds United and Crystal Palace have both shown interest in Everton and Republic of Ireland defender Jake O'Brien, 25. Nottingham Forest are holding talks with Brazilian club Corinthians over a move for 20-year-old midfielder Andre.

Hull City have reached an agreement with Union Berlin to sign 21-year-old German forward Ilyas Ansah in a deal worth more than €20m.
