WSL's three newcomers: Birmingham, Crystal Palace and Charlton aim to make their mark

The Women's Super League expands from 12 to 14 teams for the 2026-27 season after three clubs earned promotion from WSL 2 at once for the first time in the competition's history. Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic all start their campaigns on Sunday, with the season officially opening on Friday evening when London City Lionesses host Manchester United.

Birmingham City return as champions

After a four-season absence, Birmingham are back in the WSL having won the WSL 2 title last season, edging a tight three-way battle with Crystal Palace and Charlton on goal difference following a final-day win. The club scored heavily and conceded few, finishing with the division's best goal difference, while striker Lily Crosthwaite was named WSL 2 player of the year. Head coach Amy Merricks brought in six new signings, including experienced defender Millie Turner, who has become the club's new captain.

Crystal Palace return after one season away

Crystal Palace are the most familiar of the three to WSL followers, having spent just one season in the second tier. The side were hard to beat, finishing with one of the best defensive records in WSL 2, though they picked up one fewer win than Birmingham. Forwards Kirsty Howat and Abbie Larkin ranked among the league's top scorers, and the club has added experienced attacker Bethany England over the summer.

Charlton Athletic arrive as underdogs

Charlton last played in the top flight 18 years ago. Despite having the best defensive record among last season's top six in WSL 2, scoring proved difficult for the club. They secured promotion via a newly introduced play-off, beating Leicester City on penalties after a goalless draw.

According to Opta's computer projections, all three promoted clubs could be drawn into a tight relegation battle alongside Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham, with very little separating the sides at the bottom of the projected table.
