British trio finish runners-up at European Boxing Championships

Great Britain's three finalists at the European Boxing Championships all came up short in their gold-medal bouts, each settling for silver.

In the women's light-middleweight final, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Chantelle Reid lost 0-5 to Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli. Reid said afterwards she was pleased to leave with a silver, even though gold would have been preferred, noting she faced a very strong opponent. She described the tournament as excellent, having fought four good bouts, and said she was grateful for the medals won at major competitions, adding she looks forward to a rematch with the Turkish boxer.

Twenty-year-old Abdul Burton also lost 0-5, falling to Russia's Viacheslav Rogozin in the men's super-bantamweight final. An emotional Burton said silver in his first major senior tournament still made him happy, and that he would learn from the defeat. He highlighted the step up from the under-23 ranks to seniors, calling the five bouts against strong opponents a great experience despite the loss.

In the day's final bout, 21-year-old Damar Thomas, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, lost a close 2-3 decision to Russia's David Surov in the men's super-heavyweight final.

Great Britain sent 15 boxers to the championships and finished with five medals in total but no gold. Callum Makin and Dimeji Shittu had earlier won bronze medals on Thursday, the same day Ireland's Lisa O'Rourke claimed gold in the women's 80kg final.
