BBC Sport commentators and reporters have put together a list of players worth watching in the new football season, highlighting those who could surprise their clubs and the wider league.

Newcastle and Coventry recruits

Newcastle United this summer signed a young Ajax midfielder in a deal potentially worth up to £23m; he made 25 appearances in European competition last season. He can operate in either a defensive or more advanced midfield role and is known for his passing range.

Newly promoted Coventry City paid a club-record fee of around £25m to sign a Ghanaian midfielder from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland. He featured in all of Ghana's World Cup matches and was named Young Player of the Year in the Danish league last season.

Emerging forwards and midfielders

Aston Villa's 17-year-old striker, born in London and raised in Luxembourg but now representing England's youth teams, has impressed with several pre-season goals, including one against Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup.

Another Villa prospect, a young midfielder from the Nottingham Forest academy, earned praise from teammates after a standout performance against PSG. With several experienced midfielders having left the club, opportunities are opening up for Villa's younger players.

Bournemouth, known for developing young talent before selling players on for significant fees, are hoping for similar progress from a young Serbian defender who made his Premier League debut last season before suffering a knee injury in December.

At Manchester United's academy, a 19-year-old winger who has overcome injury setbacks has stood out in pre-season matches.

Swiss talent after the World Cup

A Freiburg midfielder who helped his club reach last season's Europa League final and impressed for Switzerland at the World Cup, scoring multiple goals, has since moved to an English club following his strong tournament form.
