Troy Jackson, a fifth-generation logger and former state Senate president, officially became the Democratic candidate for Maine's Senate seat on Saturday at a special convention in Bangor. Jackson won without real opposition after all major rivals withdrew, clearing the way following the exit of initial nominee Graham Platner, an oysterman and marine veteran who ended his campaign amid mounting controversies culminating in a sexual assault allegation he has denied.

Jackson's victory was confirmed by a vote of 566 to 5, and he had already secured majority support from delegates elected the previous weekend. In his speech, Jackson called for turning the page and focusing on the general election, where he will face five-term Republican incumbent Susan Collins in November. Preliminary polling from the University of New Hampshire shows Jackson with a slight edge over Collins.

Jackson, who began his political career as a Republican and once opposed abortion and gay marriage, is now staunchly progressive and plans to run on Platner's economic populist platform. While some voters criticized the nomination process as unrepresentative of the over 200,000 primary voters, Jackson pledged to meet voters across the state, especially in rural communities.

Party leaders emphasized that the convention was a response to a growing grassroots movement to build power for ordinary working people. Jackson noted that Collins has been 'concerned' for 30 years but has not acted, urging voters to support his campaign.
