When the Trump administration cracks down on Anthropic, who benefits?

The Trump administration forced Anthropic to take down two latest AI models citing national security, but critics say the move may be politically motivated and could even boost Anthropic's popularity.

What happened?

On Friday, the Trump administration sent a letter to Anthropic demanding the immediate removal of two new AI models: Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The official reason was national security concerns, but no specifics were provided. To comply, Anthropic had to completely shut down both models because it could not guarantee they would not be used by foreign nationals.

Reasons and suspicions

According to reports, the White House was tipped off by Amazon researchers who allegedly found a way to bypass Fable 5's guardrails. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised these concerns with the administration.

However, independent cybersecurity experts have signed an open letter asking Trump to revoke the order. They argue that forcing network defenders to remove advanced cybersecurity capabilities is dangerous. Moreover, Anthropic itself stated that similar vulnerabilities exist in other companies' models.

Political tension

Anthropic has had a strained relationship with the Trump administration—it was previously labeled a supply chain risk, and a lawsuit is ongoing. Many view this crackdown as retaliatory rather than a genuine security measure.

Who benefits?

Despite the immediate damage, some analysts predict Anthropic could gain popularity. A previous conflict with the administration led to a spike in downloads of its Claude assistant, as the public began seeing Anthropic as a symbol of resistance.

Podcast participants note that this could turn into a marketing win: “Everyone loves a bad boy.” The more the government emphasizes the danger, the more people want to try the model.

What about competitors?

Other AI leaders like OpenAI may feel safer as long as they avoid direct confrontation with the administration. However, the regulatory landscape remains unpredictable—based on political relationships rather than clear rules.
