England have booked their place in the World Cup semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway in Miami. Despite the win, manager Thomas Tuchel was far from pleased with his team's display.

"We got lucky," Tuchel said after a match where Norway took the lead, missed a great chance to make it 2-0, had a goal disallowed, and hit the crossbar. "We made life very, very difficult for ourselves. The result is fantastic. We are in the last four. It's amazing but [I am] not happy with the performance – in every sense."

Tuchel suggested that one thing helped England advance: pure mentality. "This is pure mentality," he said.

Jude Bellingham, who scored both England goals (47th and 93rd minutes), responded to his manager's criticism: "Yeah well, whatever. It's difficult out there, it's a tough shift. All the players have put in a tough shift. My thoughts and appreciation goes to the players out there who put in a great shift."

Several former England players praised Tuchel's honesty. Alan Shearer told BBC Sport: "Over the years, we might have had someone come out and say that we stuck together and we were brilliant. You have to give him [Tuchel] credit for doing it – he was having none of that." Wayne Rooney added: "He was spot on in terms of the mentality. The character of the players has got them through that game because for large parts of that game Norway were the better team."

England had to endure hot and humid conditions in Miami and have little recovery time before the semi-final in Atlanta. Former defender Matt Upson expects a different start: "I expect England to start the semi-final with a different tempo and different mindset."
