Turkey proposes steps to Russia and Ukraine to ease Black Sea tensions
Turkey's foreign minister said Ankara has sent proposals to Russia and Ukraine aimed at de-escalating the situation in the Black Sea. Details of the proposals have not yet been made public.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that Ankara has sent proposals to both Russia and Ukraine aimed at reducing tensions in the Black Sea.
Fidan did not specify what concrete measures are being proposed to either side, but stressed that the initiative is aimed at de-escalating the situation in the region.
Turkey's regional role
Turkey, which borders the Black Sea and controls the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, has repeatedly acted as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine during the war. The country has sought to maintain relations with both sides while offering its territory for talks and getting involved in issues related to grain exports and other Black Sea matters.
It is not yet known how Moscow and Kyiv have responded to Ankara's proposal.
