In a thrilling conclusion to Group D of the 2026 World Cup, Turkey defeated the United States 3-2 in Los Angeles, with a stoppage-time winner from Kaan Ayhan. Despite the loss, the USA had already secured their spot in the next round, while Turkey were eliminated before kick-off.

The USA started strongly, opening the scoring early through Auston Trusty after a defensive error by Turkey. However, Turkey gradually grew into the game, with Arda Güler and Orkun Kökçü combining to equalize. Kökçü finished a well-worked move to make it 1-1. In the second half, Mark McKenzie had a goal disallowed for offside, but Kökçü struck again to put Turkey ahead. The USA responded with a powerful first-time strike from Sebastian Berhalter to make it 2-2. Christian Pulisic, introduced to a loud reception, came close twice but was denied by excellent saves from Uğurcan Çakır. Deep into stoppage time, Kaan Ayhan pounced on a rebound to seal the victory for Turkey.

Meanwhile, Australia and Paraguay played out a 0-0 draw in Santa Clara, a result that confirmed both teams' progression to the last 32. Neither side was willing to take risks, knowing a loss could cost them qualification. Only seven shots on target were recorded across the entire match – five for Australia and two for Paraguay. Goalkeepers Patrick Beach (Australia) and Orlando Gil (Paraguay) made crucial saves. Jordan Bos had two late chances for Australia but couldn't find the net. Paraguay's Mauricio had opportunities in the second half, but Beach denied him both times. Australia had three shots on goal in the first half, including efforts from Jordan Bos and Cristian Volpato, but Gil was equal to them.
