Twitch lets streamers opt out of Amazon training generative AI on their content
Twitch has introduced a new setting allowing streamers to prevent Amazon from using their content to train generative AI models, a feature that was previously enabled by default without users' knowledge.
Twitch, owned by Amazon, has updated its account settings to give streamers the ability to opt out of having their content used to train generative AI models. Many users may not have realized that this data collection had previously been switched on automatically for their accounts.
Under the new option, streamers who opt out will have their live streams, on-demand versions of those streams, clips, chat messages, and any other text or images on their channel excluded from future use in training Amazon's AI models. Twitch states that the purpose of these models is to generate or synthesize text, audio, images or video.
However, opting out does not cover all AI or machine-learning uses. Streamers' content may still be used for other purposes, such as powering automated captions. Twitch also notes that its AutoMod moderation tool does not retain user data or use it to generate content. The company explained that certain AI-driven features support safety across the whole platform, and disabling them individually would weaken protection for other users, which is why those specific functions cannot be turned off separately.
How to opt out
Streamers who want to stop Amazon from using their content for generative AI training can go to their Twitch account settings and disable the "Training for Generative AI" toggle. The settings page also clarifies that Twitch and Amazon may still use channel content for other AI-related features. If a user participates in another streamer's chat, that streamer's own settings determine whether the user's messages get used for genAI training.
