Ubisoft is shutting down its NFT strategy game Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, with servers going offline on October 30. The game launched in 2024, well after the NFT craze had faded.
Ubisoft has officially announced the shutdown of its Web3-enabled NFT strategy game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. According to a notice posted on the game's official Discord server, the game's servers will cease operations on October 30. The company said it made the decision to sunset the game after careful consideration.
The title has managed to build a small but genuine fanbase, yet many within that community had long suspected this outcome. Back in May, Ubisoft revealed plans to move the game away from Web3 mechanics. Originally, one of the main selling points of Champions Tactics was the ability to mint and trade battle units on a blockchain marketplace in exchange for digital currency.
What makes the situation particularly striking is the game's release timeline. Champions Tactics launched in 2024, nearly three years after the NFT craze peaked in 2021 and started declining in 2022. By the time the game arrived, public enthusiasm for NFTs had largely faded, making the launch seem oddly out of step with market trends.
Still, Ubisoft appears determined to keep pursuing blockchain-based games. The company is currently offering in-game rewards to encourage Champions Tactics players to move to Might and Magic Fates. That game is a deckbuilder similar to Hearthstone, allowing players to buy and sell cards using either cash or cryptocurrency.
