Uganda's King of Tooro, once world's youngest reigning monarch, dies at 34

The King of Tooro, one of Uganda's traditional kingdoms, has died at the age of 34, the kingdom's prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, announced on Thursday evening local time. The king, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, passed away at around 10:00pm local time; no cause of death was disclosed.
Uganda is officially a republic with a single elected head of state, but it retains several traditional kingdoms that date back to the pre-colonial era. These kingdoms hold largely symbolic political power, yet carry significant cultural and social weight among their populations. Tooro is a small kingdom in western Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Rukidi IV ascended to the throne at just three years old, on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. That coronation made him the world's youngest reigning monarch at the time. Shortly before his death was announced, a minister in President Yoweri Museveni's government, Balaam Barugahara, said the king had been receiving medical treatment in the United States.
Prime Minister Akiiki described the loss as immeasurable, noting that the king, who never married, left behind an heir, meaning the continuity of the crown is assured. News of his death prompted widespread mourning across social media and extensive coverage in Ugandan media.
Opposition leader and former pop star Bobi Wine offered condolences online, calling it devastating news and wishing the king eternal peace. In April, marking the king's birthday, Tooro's prime minister had said the young monarch was closely connected to his generation and that his youth was a strength rather than a limitation, bringing fresh energy and vision for the kingdom's future.
