Firefighters use swimming pool water to fight thatched roof blaze

Fire crews in Essex, England tackled a fire on a thatched roof by drawing water from a nearby swimming pool after struggling with a limited local water supply.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service was called shortly after midnight, at 00:38 BST, to Maldon Road in Woodham Mortimer, where a house with a thatched roof had caught fire.

Because the area presented what officials described as a difficult water supply, crews had to shuttle water to the scene from a nearby swimming pool along with other open water sources to keep tackling the flames.

Group manager Scott Ford said crews worked exceptionally well throughout the night to put out the fire, and that they would remain at the scene into the afternoon to clear away the remaining burnt thatch from the roof.

An investigation into what caused the fire is expected to begin once the site has been confirmed safe to enter.
