Fire near London Paddington triggers rail chaos, Heathrow trains cancelled
A fire near the tracks in London's Paddington area caused a power failure that blocked all rail lines between Paddington and Heathrow airport, with disruption expected into the evening.
A fire that broke out near train tracks in the Paddington area of London has caused widespread disruption to rail services, including the cancellation of connections to Heathrow airport. According to National Rail, the fire triggered an electricity supply failure that has blocked all lines between Paddington station and the airport.
Photos shared on social media show thick plumes of smoke rising over the Paddington area. National Rail said cancellations and delays are expected to continue until 7.15pm.
Multiple services affected
Great Western Railway (GWR) has cancelled its services to Reading, while the Elizabeth line has been partly suspended. Heathrow Express reported that no trains are running in either direction between Paddington and Heathrow.
Heathrow airport has advised passengers to allow extra time for their journeys, noting that the Piccadilly line, which also serves the airport, is experiencing delays.
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the Elizabeth line is suspended between Paddington and Heathrow terminals four and five, as well as between Paddington and Reading, while services toward Abbey Wood face severe delays. The entire Piccadilly line is also experiencing severe delays, linked to an earlier trespasser incident at Hammersmith station.
GWR said trains may be cancelled, delayed, or terminated and restarted from Reading, with disruption expected to last until 7pm. The London fire brigade has not yet provided a comment on the incident.
