Ukraine resumes reporting intercepted missiles after new Patriots arrive from allies
Following a combined Russian drone-and-missile attack on August 27, Ukraine's military reported downed missiles for the first time in weeks. President Zelensky had earlier said the country received some Patriot missiles from its coalition of allies.
Russia launched a combined drone-and-ballistic-missile attack on Ukraine early on August 27. In the Kharkiv region, a drone hit a fourth-floor balcony of an apartment building in the Industrialnyi district. In the Zaporizhzhia region, a 78-year-old woman was killed and several other people were injured, according to Ivan Fedorov, head of the regional military administration. There were also injuries reported in Kryvyi Rih, while infrastructure was damaged in the Sumy and Odesa regions.
In Kyiv, city officials said falling drone debris caused significant damage to a school building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. An air-raid alert sounded again in the capital several hours after the overnight strikes, and a later drone attack in the Holosiivskyi district injured a truck driver, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
Interception data returns
After the overnight attack, Ukraine's General Staff published interception figures for the first time in a long while, reporting that air defenses had downed one Onyx anti-ship missile and seven ballistic missiles. The total number of missiles Russia fired during the attack was not disclosed.
Ukraine's Air Defense Forces had stopped reporting downed Russian missiles in mid-August amid an acute shortage of interceptors. A source told Bloomberg the change in reporting was a security measure taken in response to Russian strikes, noting that reports on intercepted ballistic missiles stopped after an attack in which Ukraine failed to stop any of 28 incoming projectiles.
On August 25, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine had received "a few" Patriot missiles following recent summits of the Nordic-Baltic Eight and the "coalition of the willing," adding that more were still needed. He repeated the point in his August 27 address, saying European allies had made important decisions this week to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
