Ukraine to mark 26 years since journalist Georgiy Gongadze's disappearance
From September 14 to 20, Ukraine will hold a Memory Week for journalist Georgiy Gongadze, marking 26 years since his disappearance. The week includes a public discussion, educational initiatives and joint partner activities.
September 16 marks 26 years since the disappearance of journalist Georgiy Gongadze, founder of Ukrainska Pravda. To mark the date, the Georgiy Gongadze Prize, together with partners, is organizing a Memory Week from September 14 to 20, featuring several public and educational events.
Public discussion
On September 16, a public event titled "26 Years of Unfinished Conversations" will take place in Kyiv, centered on the question of what participants would say to Gongadze today. Several Ukrainian journalists and public figures, including past laureates of the prize, will take part. The event will also honor media workers and journalists killed or illegally held by Russia, and will feature a video with memories of Gongadze. The event will be held in a shelter, with the exact location shared with registered participants.
Memory lesson in schools
The prize's team, together with partners, continues distributing a lesson on the Gongadze case to educational institutions, aimed at students in grades 9-11 and covering freedom of speech, human rights and media literacy.
Professional dialogues with students
During the week, several meetings with students will address challenges facing journalism during wartime, including investigative journalism, war correspondents' work, media independence and the responsibility of telling Ukraine's story to the world. The meetings will take place in Kyiv, Ostroh and Lviv.
In parallel, an information campaign will share memories of Gongadze, along with materials on the cultural context of that era. On September 16, Ukrainska Pravda and the Sens bookstore will hold a joint initiative featuring a themed display and bookmarks for buyers.
The Gongadze Prize was established in 2018 and is supported by graduates of the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School.
