Ukraine has released its latest estimate of the losses suffered by Russian forces in August as Moscow continued its war against Ukraine. According to the tally, Russia lost 42,020 troops, 1,827 artillery systems and 89 tanks over the course of the month.
The figures show that Russia's frontline losses keep climbing, yet this has not so far reduced Moscow's willingness to continue offensive operations. Despite the scale of losses in both personnel and equipment, Russia continues to strike Ukraine with ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones — weapons that Ukrainian air defenses find particularly difficult to intercept in time.
Mounting losses, uninterrupted strikes
Ukraine presents these numbers as evidence of the heavy cost Russia is paying to keep fighting, in terms of both manpower and equipment. At the same time, the fact that Moscow is still able to carry out missile and high-speed drone strikes shows that steep losses on the ground have not yet translated into a slowdown of aerial attacks.
The pattern — rising frontline losses alongside sustained long-range strike capability — reflects the contradictory dynamics of the current phase of the war, in which both sides continue to absorb losses without either achieving a decisive advantage.
