Ukraine Races to Find a Way to Counter Russia's Iskander Missiles Before Next Grid Strikes

Ukrainian forces are exploring several ways to counter Russia's Iskander missiles, but only one method is currently operational — and it must work before the next wave of strikes on the power grid begins.

An urgent search for a countermeasure

Ukraine is reportedly examining several possible approaches to counter Russia's Iskander ballistic missiles, regarded as one of the most dangerous weapons used against Ukrainian infrastructure. According to Euromaidan Press, five potential methods have been identified, but only one is currently developed enough to be used before the next expected wave of strikes on the country's power grid.

A narrow window in the forest

The only method available right now relies on the fact that an Iskander launcher remains exposed above ground for only about twenty minutes after leaving cover. Within that brief window, the launcher — typically hidden in forested terrain — must be located and neutralized before it can fire.

A difficult task

Pinpointing a mobile launcher in a forest within such a short timeframe demands fast, precise reconnaissance and poses major technical and logistical challenges. The other four proposed methods are reportedly not yet ready for practical use, leaving the ability to spot and neutralize the launcher during its brief exposure as the main near-term hope for countering these strikes.
