Ukrainian medics report over half of Maul robot evacuation missions succeed
Ukraine's 1st Separate Medical Battalion says its Maul ground robot has completed more than half of its combat evacuation missions successfully, saving nearly two wounded soldiers per vehicle on average.
Ukraine's 1st Separate Medical Battalion (MedBat) has released data on the combat performance of the Maul unmanned ground vehicle, used to evacuate wounded soldiers from the front line. The robot was first deployed in combat in January 2025, and its first fully successful evacuation of a casualty was recorded by October of that year.
By late September 2026, battalion crews had carried out hundreds of Maul missions, with a 51.9% success rate. A mission counts as successful when the wounded soldier is handed off to the next stage of evacuation. Over its operational lifetime, a single Maul unit evacuates an average of 1.92 casualties, though survivability varies widely — some vehicles are lost within 20 minutes, while others complete up to 12 successful runs. Outcomes depend on preparation time, situational awareness, coordination with neighboring units, weather and enemy activity in the area, while time of day rarely proves decisive.
The unit noted that a failed mission does not automatically mean a soldier died. In most unsuccessful runs, the vehicle simply returned without having picked up a casualty; the rest involved the robot being disabled before loading. In 4.6% of all missions, the UGV was destroyed with a wounded soldier still aboard.
To raise the success rate, MedBat prioritizes missions using intelligence on the severity of injuries and the logistical risks involved, and checks each vehicle's technical condition beforehand. More than ten personnel are involved in running a single mission, including a rapid-response team dubbed the "lively group," which delivers the Maul to its launch point, services it, and later retrieves and inspects it for damage.
Maul is an ATV-based ground robot fitted with an armored capsule for transporting casualties, a combustion engine, suspension and electronic warfare equipment. It travels at 30-40 km/h during evacuations and can cover up to 110 km in a single mission. The Come Back Alive Foundation has separately launched the RoboBro initiative to procure ground evacuation robots, aiming to save at least 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers' lives using such systems.
