Ukraine Relies on Starshield in War With Russia: What It Is and Who Limited Access
Ukraine depends on Starshield, the military-grade version of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite service, in its fight against Russia. An Al Jazeera explainer asks what the system is and who has limited Ukraine's access to it.
Ukraine relies on Starshield, the military-grade version of the Starlink satellite service run by entrepreneur Elon Musk, in its fight against Russia. The detail comes from an explainer published by the news outlet Al Jazeera on 15 October 2026.
The headline of the piece poses two questions: what Starshield is, and who has limited Ukraine's access to it. The portion of the article available here gives no further detail on the nature or scale of the restriction, or on who made the decision, so those specifics are not reported here.
The one point the available text makes clear is that Ukraine depends on this satellite service in wartime. Any limit on access could therefore affect Ukraine's ability to keep defending itself against Russia.
