Ukraine intercepts Geran-5 jet drone flying at 425 km/h
Ukrainian air defense has caught a Russian jet-powered Geran-5 drone traveling at 425 km/h, a drone type that has frequently outrun Ukraine's interceptor drones since January; crews currently stop just over half of these jet drones compared to more than 90% of older Shaheds.

Ukrainian air defense units have intercepted a Russian jet-powered Geran-5 attack drone flying at a speed of 425 kilometers per hour. Since January, this faster drone type has often managed to evade Ukraine's interceptor drones, whose capabilities were largely developed to counter the slower, propeller-driven Shahed drones.
Interception rates diverge sharply
Current figures show that Ukrainian forces are stopping just over half of the jet-powered drones Russia launches. By comparison, the older propeller-driven Shahed drones are intercepted more than 90% of the time. The gap highlights how the added speed of jet-powered drones poses a significant challenge for Ukraine's air defense systems.
Russia scales up production
Despite the lower interception rate against the newer drone type, Russia continues to manufacture these weapons in large numbers, reportedly by the thousand. This means Ukraine faces continued pressure to upgrade its air defense capabilities to keep pace with the growing number of jet-powered drones in Russia's arsenal.
The successful intercept illustrates the ongoing technological race between Russian drone development and Ukrainian countermeasures, as both sides adapt their tactics in the skies over Ukraine.
