Ukraine has secured, for the first time in its history, a seat on the United Nations Subcommittee dedicated to preventing torture and inhumane treatment. Anton Symkovych has been elected as Ukraine's representative on the body, with his term running from 2027 to 2030.

The election was announced by Ukraine's permanent representative, following the standard UN process in which member states cast votes to fill seats on the subcommittee.

Voting results

In the first round of voting, the Ukrainian candidate received 60 votes — enough to secure the seat outright without requiring additional rounds of balloting.

About the subcommittee

The UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture is an international body tasked with monitoring and promoting efforts against inhumane treatment and torture worldwide. Ukraine's election of a representative to the subcommittee means the country will, for the first time, be directly involved in this UN mechanism focused on protecting human rights in this area.
