Ukraine tests four new drone interceptors as Russia deploys faster Geran drones
Kyiv is accelerating development of new air defense systems after Russia used more than 2,500 jet-powered drones in August alone.
Ukraine is rapidly expanding its air defense capabilities, developing and testing several new types of drone interceptors in response to a growing wave of Russian drone attacks and their increasing speed.
According to available reports, Kyiv is working on four new interceptor types designed to counter Russia's jet-powered drones, including upgraded Geran-type aircraft that fly faster than earlier versions.
Russia used more than 2,500 jet-powered drones in attacks against Ukraine in August alone, the data shows. The figure points to a significant increase in the intensity of Russian aerial strikes and adds further pressure on Ukraine's air defense systems.
The appearance of faster drones makes interception more difficult, as traditional air defense methods are not always able to respond effectively to increased speeds. As a result, Ukraine is seeking to speed up the development and deployment of new technologies to provide an adequate response to the evolving threat.
The new interceptors are being tested with the aim of moving them into mass production and battlefield use as quickly as possible, both along the front line and in rear areas, where civilians and infrastructure regularly suffer from drone strikes.
The situation reflects a broader trend in the war between Russia and Ukraine, in which both sides continue to develop and refine unmanned aerial technologies for both offense and defense.
