Ukraine strikes Russian cargo bound for Iran as conflict widens
Ukraine announced strikes on Russian vessels in the Caspian Sea allegedly carrying military cargo to Iran. President Zelensky claims Russia provides satellite intelligence to Iran for targeting US military facilities in the Middle East.
The battlefield involving Iran is expanding, and Ukraine has become a new player by launching long-range strikes on targets it says are linked to the transfer of Russian military equipment to Iran. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Russia, by providing satellite information to Iran, has helped Tehran target US military facilities in the Middle East. These developments tie the confrontation between Tehran and Washington to the Russia-Ukraine war.
In a post on social network X, Zelensky said that since early July, Russian satellites have been actively monitoring Gulf states and US military installations in the region, passing the images to Iran. He highlighted a "clear correlation" between Russian satellite imagery and Iranian attacks, both before strikes for preparation and after to assess damage. He specifically noted that on July 19 and 20, four air bases—two in Bahrain, one in Jordan, and one in Kuwait—were within Russian satellite observation range.
On Saturday, Ukraine announced that its long-range attacks targeted vessels in the Caspian Sea which, according to Kyiv, were used to transport military cargo between Iran and Russia. Iran said one of the targeted vessels was an Iranian commercial ship, resulting in one sailor killed and several injured. In response, Tehran summoned Ukraine's acting chargé d'affaires to protest the attack.
Some Iranian social media users have called for retaliation using Kheibar Shekan ballistic missiles. Former Iranian lawmaker Nezameddin Mousavi said the response should be delivered in the Black Sea. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a phone call with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, condemned the attack and called for a response from the UN Security Council, the EU, and the international community. This call came two days after the EU imposed new sanctions on Iran for human rights violations.
US President Donald Trump said that Russia and China would not supply arms to Iran. On Truth Social, Trump wrote that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him China would "under no circumstances" give or sell weapons to Iran, and that Vladimir Putin also assured him Moscow would not sell weapons. Trump's remarks contrast with Zelensky's allegations of Russian satellite aid to Iran.
