Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said that Ukraine will respond in kind to any unfriendly actions directed against the country. The statement came as he commented on the recent escalation in Polish-Ukrainian relations.

Sybiha noted that Ukraine has always approached matters constructively and appreciated the assistance received from Poland. He stressed the importance of not politicizing sensitive historical issues and leaving them to historians.

The minister criticized Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who decided to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle due to the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Sybiha described this as disrespect towards the president, Ukrainian soldiers, and the people. He added that Nawrocki has become a destroyer of positive progress and is receiving applause from Moscow.

At the same time, Sybiha called on Poles to act with restraint and diplomacy. He emphasized that Ukraine and Poland are united by common challenges, interests, and a shared European future. He also thanked Poles who oppose escalating tensions with Ukraine and reminded them of the common enemy – Russia.

Following Nawrocki's decision, Sybiha, Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar, and Head of the President's Office Kyrylo Budanov announced they would return their Polish state awards. Zelenskyy sent the order back to Nawrocki by post. All Ukrainian presidents who received the Polish Order of the White Eagle have subsequently renounced it.
