Ukraine's newly announced army reform has drawn sharp criticism for addressing only superficial issues rather than the real problems of pay inequality. Commentators argue that people do not avoid infantry service solely due to money—the core issue is low base pay and instability, with additional payments only while directly on the front line.

The reform is accused of creating a gap between different military specialties. Drone operators, sappers, logistics personnel, mechanics, and other essential roles are overlooked, despite being crucial for the army's functioning. Soldiers often do not choose their positions; they fill needed roles.

Another point of criticism is that the reform offers better conditions to those who delayed service rather than to those who have served since 2022 or earlier. This penalizes the most loyal soldiers. The author emphasizes the sacrifice of those who have put careers, businesses, and family lives on hold for years.

Commentators regret that current soldiers with frontline experience were not sufficiently involved in developing the reform. Only such involvement could produce reforms that truly meet the army's needs. The fundamental problem is not specific bonuses but overall respect for service and fair base pay for all servicemembers.
