Leaders are meeting in Kyiv this Monday, which marks the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union, to discuss new pledges of support for the country. Politico's Brussels Playbook podcast hosts Zoya Sheftalovich and Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Nick Vinocur discuss what kind of backing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hopes to secure from the so-called Coalition of the Willing as the country braces for another difficult winter.

German state election

The episode also looks at the upcoming election in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is on course for a sweeping victory. Should the party secure an outright majority, its lead candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, could become the first AfD politician to lead a German state government.

Brussels e-scooters

On a lighter note, the podcast covers a local development in Brussels, where city authorities announced they had found a way around a court ruling that threatened to force e-scooters off the streets starting Sept. 1. As a result, the scooters will remain available in the Belgian capital at least until the end of the year.
