Ukrainian drones launch 'largest attack' on Russia's Yaroslavl region, governor says; major oil refinery hit
A Ukrainian drone strike overnight on the Yaroslavl region set fire to the Slavneft-owned Yaroslavneftorgsintez refinery. The governor said 88 drones were shot down and described it as the most massive attack on the area.
The governor of Russia's Yaroslavl region, Mikhail Yevrayev, said the area came under attack by Ukrainian drones overnight on August 6. Calling it the most massive attack of enemy drones, he said electronic-warfare units and air-defense forces destroyed 88 of them.
During the strike, traffic departing Yaroslavl for Moscow was suspended, leading to changes in several bus routes. According to the governor, the attack destroyed a private house, broke windows in several apartment buildings, and damaged cars, though he did not specify where. He also offered no explanation for the intense fires that sent smoke billowing over Yaroslavl. No one was killed or injured, he said.
Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channels Supernova+ and Exilenova+, as well as the independent channel Astra, reported a fire at the Yaroslavneftorgsintez oil refinery, owned by Slavneft, citing eyewitness photos and videos showing columns of smoke over the city.
Yaroslavneftorgsintez, also known as Slavneft-YANOS, is Russia's fifth-largest oil refinery by capacity. It has been struck by Ukraine at least six times since the beginning of 2026. Ukrainian drones have routinely targeted Russian refineries, forcing them to partially or fully suspend operations, which contributes to fuel shortages and higher prices.
