Ukrainian drones reach Russia's key gas-producing region for the first time, 2,800 km from Ukraine
Ukrainian drones struck Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District for the first time, sparking a fire at an industrial site in Novy Urengoy. It marks Ukraine's deepest strike inside Russian territory to date.
Ukraine's armed forces have carried out a drone strike on the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District for the first time, a region located roughly 2,800 kilometers (1,740 miles) from the Ukrainian border, regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov said.
A fire broke out at an industrial facility in the city of Novy Urengoy after debris from a downed drone fell on the site. No casualties were reported.
Artem Zhoga, the Kremlin's presidential envoy to the Urals Federal District, said the drone had attempted to hit a fuel and energy facility in the Yamal region.
Ukraine's deepest strike to date
According to the independent Russian investigative outlet Agentstvo, this is the farthest into Russian territory that Ukrainian drones have struck since the war began. The Yamalo-Nenets region is responsible for producing about 80% of Russia's natural gas, making the strike a significant escalation in Ukraine's campaign against facilities tied to Russia's energy revenues.
