Ukrainian drones hit Ryazan oil refinery, schools and kindergartens closed in parts of the city
Ryazan region Governor Pavel Malkov said Ukrainian drones started a fire at the regional oil refinery on October 15. Classes and kindergarten attendance were cancelled in part of the city.
Ryazan region Governor Pavel Malkov in Russia said Ukrainian drones attacked the region's oil refinery and caused a fire. The strike came on the morning of October 15, as Ukraine continues hitting Russian energy facilities during the war. Ryazan is a city roughly 200 kilometres southeast of Moscow.
Malkov said a warehouse and vehicles were damaged at another facility in Ryazan. The governor reported no casualties.
The Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+ published a photo early in the morning showing a flare over the Ryazan refinery. The channel linked it to the drone attack.
Schools and kindergartens closed
Because of the attack, authorities cancelled classes and kindergarten attendance on October 15 in Ryazan's Oktyabrsky district and part of the Sovetsky district. According to Malkov, 14 schools and 25 kindergartens were affected.
The previous evening, the governor said 23 drones had been shot down over the region over 24 hours. No casualties or damage were reported at that time.
Background
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with the Financial Times that Ukraine's military is resuming strikes on Russian oil refineries. He said Ukraine had refrained from attacking Russian energy facilities for three days at the request of the United States, but that Russia had continued to strike Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
