Ukrainian drones attacked the Surgut condensate stabilisation plant in Russia on Friday, 16 October. The facility lies roughly 2,400 kilometres from the Ukrainian border and belongs to Russian energy giant Gazprom, for which it is one of the most important processing sites. The strike shows that Ukrainian drones can reach targets deep inside Russia during the ongoing war.

Fire at the plant

Eyewitnesses posted videos on social media showing a large fire on the plant's grounds. The extent of the damage is still being established.

Roman Kucharuk, governor of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, the region where Surgut is located, confirmed the attack. He said a drone strike had set fire to an industrial facility. According to the governor, specialists are assessing the scale and nature of the damage, he is personally monitoring the situation, and he urged residents to stay calm. The official did not specify how badly the facility was damaged.

Why the plant matters

The Surgut plant is Russia's largest processor of mixed oil and gas condensate and has strategic importance for the country's energy sector. It processes gas condensate, which is used to make automotive and aviation fuel. Its capacity reaches 12 million tonnes of feedstock a year.

The plant is one of the main suppliers of motor fuel in Western Siberia and across Russia.
