A Ukrainian drone attack overnight into Monday killed at least 13 people and injured 39 in Russia's republic of Tatarstan, regional officials reported. The strikes hit the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk, where Mayor Radmir Belyayev said drones targeted both civilian and industrial locations.
Unconfirmed reports indicate the Nizhnekamskneftekhim petrochemical plant, a major producer of synthetic rubber and plastics, was among the sites hit. Following the deadly attack, Tatarstan's authorities declared a period of mourning.
This is not the first time Nizhnekamsk has come under attack — in June, Ukrainian drones struck Tatneft's Taneco oil refinery in the same city.
Russia's Defense Ministry said it shot down 456 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and annexed Crimea between Sunday night and Monday morning.
The strike underscores Ukraine's continued campaign of long-range drone attacks against Russian energy and petrochemical infrastructure tied to the country's war effort.
