The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kane, announced during Senate Appropriations Committee hearings in Washington that a Ukrainian F-16 had shot down a Russian fighter jet in an aerial engagement for the first time.

In his testimony, Kane highlighted the remarkable progress Ukraine has made in scaling its defense capabilities, from ground-to-air systems to air-to-air combat, thanks to support from international partners. He specifically noted a recent air battle in which a Ukrainian F-16 destroyed a Russian aircraft.

Senator Richard Durbin had asked about the potential impact of a three-year halt in funding for Ukraine's air defense. In response, Kane emphasized that Ukraine's ability to build a multi-layered defense system has grown significantly over the past few years.

This announcement marks a milestone in Ukraine's use of Western-supplied F-16 fighters, which were delivered by Denmark and the Netherlands. Military analysts suggest that such successes could help Ukraine challenge Russian air superiority.
